The Old Me

I get teared up whenever I think about how grateful I am that I learned this little secret.

I used to avoid mirrors. My hips and knees ached, my clothes felt tighter, and every morning started with a sigh.

I remember one afternoon, I was watching my grandkids and just couldn’t keep up. My heart was pounding, my legs were sore, and I was so out of breath that I had to sit down while they kept running around me.

When the house finally got quiet, I sat on the couch and cried. I felt older than my age… and trapped in a body that didn’t feel like mine anymore.

I tried everything long walks, cutting sugar, lemon water, even skipping meals. Still, every week the number on the scale crept higher.

One day, my friend and I met up for lunch at our favorite little café downtown. When the waitress came to take our order, I almost didn’t recognize her.

It was our old waitress the one who’d been there for years! She looked incredible, glowing and healthy, like she’d somehow turned back time.

“67 pounds at my age!” she said, laughing as we hugged her. “And I didn’t give up my favorite foods or spend hours at the gym.”
